Cllr Stephen Knight - Your 1st Choice for London's City Hall

Stephen Knight

Experienced, Prominent and Principled

Dear visitor,

At the last London Assembly election, I won the highest vote ever achieved (49,985) by a Liberal Democrat in a London constituency. Two years on, the political environment has changed beyond recognition, but our values must not.

The coalition puts us in danger of failing to distinguish our left-of-centre progressive values from the right-wing ideology of the Conservatives. If we are to succeed at the 2012 London elections, we must re-assert our identity and select candidates who are strong enough and experienced enough to speak out when coalition policies are unfairly felt by those most in need or are likely to widen inequality.

As the Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Richmond Council, I have long experience of speaking up on environmental and social issues. I have already achieved a prominence with the London media, for example over our pioneering CO2 related parking charges. I will continue to champion environmental issues at City Hall, such as the scandal of 5,000 early deaths a year in London from air pollution.

As your London Assembly member I would speak out on London's housing crisis. The explosion in land values over the years, coupled with the loss of council housing, has left many Londoners unable to afford a decent home. Forcing poorer families out of London by cutting their Housing Benefit is not an answer that Liberal Democrats should contemplate. We must tackle extortionate rents, not penalise the families being forced to pay them.

I want all Londoners to feel safe and valued, able to earn a living wage and well-served by infrastructure, including a transport system we can be proud of.

I hope you will give me your 1st preference vote.

Best wishes,

The Lib Dem Council has converted a disused pavilion next to the skatepark at Kingsfield in Hampton Wick into a new youth centre and café.

Under a partnership agreement, Richmond Youth Partnership (RYP) will manage the new café and provide a qualified youth worker based on site. The building will provide a community facility, with a special focus on young people and the popular skatepark nearby. It features an outside seating area and an additional room for community use. Young people were instrumental in the development, raising some of the funds for the refurbishment and joining the steering group.
